The Achilles tendon attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone. Unfortunately, tight calf muscles, improper footwear, overuse, or doing too much too soon can cause the Achilles tendon to become irritated and inflamed.
What is it?
Achilles Tendonitis is the inflammation, and sometimes degeneration, of the Achilles tendon.
Common Signs & Symptoms:
Symptoms include pain and stiffness in the Achilles area and sometimes, swelling around the Achilles. Acute Achilles Tendonitis tends to be more painful, while the pain in chronic Achilles Tendonitis has a more of gradual onset.
Assessment methods involve evaluating pain levels and location, signs of stiffness and swelling in the Achilles area, and testing of strength and range of motion limitations.
