Turf Toe is often caused by repeated hyperextension of the big toe, resulting in stretching of the toe ligaments. Those who play martial arts or wear flexible footwear are more at risk of a Turf Toe injury.
What is it?
Turf Toe is a sprain, stretching or tearing, of the ligaments around the big toe.
Common Signs & Symptoms:
Symptoms include swelling, pain, and tenderness on and around the big toe. Bending and pulling upwards on the toe may, also, increase pain levels.
Assessment methods involve evaluating levels and location of pain, and tenderness commonly on the ball of the foot on palpation. Similar to other injuries, an X-ray will confirm the diagnosis.
